Volunteers

No well run agency can survive without the hard work and dedication of volunteers. At Good Samaritans, volunteers fulfil tasks normally performed by a secretary, file clerk, receptionist, scheduling clerk, data entry clerk, pantry stocker, bagger, and ambassador to the clients! The first person and the last person a client sees at Good Samaritans is generally a volunteer!

Paul Sine epitomizes what a volunteer should be. Though he may look younger than springtime, Paul is now in his 80's and still volunteering every week at Good Samaritans, along with a few other places. Paul started his commitment to Good Samaritans in 1987 and can be counted on to be there when the work needs to be done. If the world were made up of more Paul Sines, it would be a wonderful place to live. We humbly tip our hats to the Good Samaritans Man of the Year...Paul Sine!

Pantry Manager

Much of the food in the Good Samaritans pantry is purchased through the North Texas Food Bank.  Every other week, Pantry Manager Darryl Eastwood will take an inventory of what is in stock, check the web site to see what's available at the Food Bank, and place an order.  The alternating weeks he rents a U-Haul truck and drives to far west Dallas to pick up the food he has ordered and deliver it back to our pantry.  For over five years Darryl has been making sure the pantry is well stocked, orderly, the shelves are filled, and the volunteers are well trained.  Without Darryl, there might be a lot less food to distribute to the hungry people of Garland, Rowlett, and Sachse. It is through generous grants from Kraft Foods that we are able to purchase food from the North Texas Food Bank.  Hundreds of pounds of food are given out each month to families going through a rough time in the GISD.  Our heartfelt gratitude to Darryl, Kraft, and the Food Bank!

Man cannot live by bread alone...so three times a week Good Samaritan volunteers bring bread AND sweets, donated by the friendly Kroger stores in the area.  On Tuesday, Bill stops by with a load, Thursdays you'll find George delivering the goodies, and on Friday it's Edgar and his SUV loaded with bread and goodies for the clients.
